This book analyzes the security of critical infrastructures such as
road, rail, water, health, and electricity networks that are vital
for a nation's society and economy, and assesses the resilience of
these networks to intentional attacks. The book combines the
analytical capabilities of experts in operations research and
management, economics, risk analysis, and defense management, and
presents graph theoretical analysis, advanced statistics, and
applied modeling methods. In many chapters, the authors provide
reproducible code that is available from the publisher's website.
Lastly, the book identifies and discusses implications for risk
assessment, policy, and insurability. The insights it offers are
globally applicable, and not limited to particular locations,
countries or contexts. Researchers, intelligence analysts, homeland
security staff, and professionals who operate critical
infrastructures will greatly benefit from the methods, models and
findings presented. While each of the twelve chapters is
self-contained, taken together they provide a sound basis for
informed decision-making and more effective operations, policy, and
defense.
This textbook examines the economic problems of military
organizations from an institutional perspective. It discusses the
efficiency and effectiveness of military performance, using a
capability-based conceptualization. Constitutional, historical and
economic considerations complement the analysis. Neither the
analysis nor the conclusions depend on any specific armed force,
culture, organization, or language. On the contrary, the challenge
of defense economics analysis and armed forces management is
reduced to a fundamental economic problem, and solutions to this
problem are offered. This book is a must-read for students,
scholars and practitioners interested in a better understanding of
defense economics.
The topic, "Northern Sea Route" has become a highly relevant point
on the strategic radar screen of many business and military
leaders, since global climate change now opens up a hitherto
impassable sea route and positions it as a strategic alternative to
the Suez route. Add to this the discovery of many easily
extractable commodities and metals in the arctic area. For
entrepreneurs, this setting offers new opportunities and risks; for
academics, a new research context emerges. The book discusses the
strategic, economic, logistic, judicial and military challenges of
the future great game in the arctic sea.
My dissertation examines why subsidiary initiatives differ with
respect to their probability of survival and identifies
initiative-related factors which cause this difference. I conduct
this examination within the context of the global research and
development (R&D) organisation of a multinational company
(MNC). My research therefore intends to answer the research
question: What determines the probability of survival of an
initiative sent by a foreign R&D subsidiary? The findings show
that initiative survival is positively influenced by social and
geographical closeness of the sending R&D subsidiary to
headquarters, by the initiative's alignment with the firm's core
areas of activity, and by the manager's past success record, i.e.
the number of already recognised initiatives sent by that manager.
Moreover, initiatives that propose exploitative innovation are more
likely to survive than initiatives that propose exploratory
innovation. However, inter-subsidiary collaboration is found to
have no significant influence on initiative survival. Finally, I
discuss the implications of these findings for theory development
and management practice.
Scholarly Essay from the year 2001 in the subject Business
economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: A+,
University of Warwick (Warwick Business School), 9 entries in the
bibliography, language: English, comment: The article researches
with the british retailer Marks and Spencer, how the theory of
strategic Turnaround-Management is feasible in practice, abstract:
After years of ever-increasing profits, the ailing British retailer
Marks and Spencer (M&S) has fallen out of favour with British
customers. Sales and profit strongly declined, followed by shakeups
in the top management team. M&S faced extinction when
confronted with Philip Green s takeover plans. Top management have
made efforts to turn M&S around. The analytical approach to
assess these efforts is as follows: Having evaluated turnaround
models (Chapter 1), I will observe actions undertaken by M&S
(Chapter 2), finally putting both sides together, determining if
the actions fit the model (Chapter 3). Introducing competitive
advantage as the measurement for success (Chapter 4), the
conclusion (Chapter 5) will show that M&S is just one example
for a problem that goes far deeper.

analyses the efficiency and effectiveness of the operations of a
supermarket chain by various analytical techniques. It will show
that while the supermarket chain is right in terms of its strategic
alignment with the environment, the operational implementation of
its business is questionable. The conclusion, featuring a system
approach, shows possibilities for improvement.

Internationale Beziehungen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die WTO
weltwirtschaftlichen Realitat andererseits ins Auge.
WTO-Prinzipien weltweiten Freihandel ermoglichen.
